Hillingdon Slipstreamers recorded wins in four out of five categories in the sixth youth race of the Imperial Racing Team Winter Series.

The 30-minute, 11-lap race, attracted young riders to the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit in Hayes from across the south east but they left with very few honours as Slipstreamers dominated.

A group of around a dozen older riders set the pace for the opening five laps until four of them including Slipstreamers Tan-veer Mann, David Swan and Lawrence Carpenter, with Frazier Carr of the Palmer Park Velo, broke away.

It turned out to be the decisive move and after the lead changed hands during the final few laps it was Mann who crossed the line first to take the U16 title, ahead of Swan and then Carr.

Dan Maslin, who played a part early on in supporting his older clubmates, won the U14 age group and Carl Jolly finished first in the U10s ahead of many of the U12 and U14 riders.

Thomas Barrowcliffe completed a successful afternoon for Slipstreamers by claiming the U8 title.

The remaining four races in the series take place at 1.30pm each Saturday until February 14.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

RACHAEL Denman became the first West Drayton Mountain Bike club rider to taste victory this year as a number of members opened their season at a very muddy Yateley Heath.

Heavy overnight rain left the track with a number of boggy sections, making it a really strength sapping course but Denman mastered the conditions to recorda convincing win in the youth ladies event.

The 2008 Southern Juvenile champion Martin Turton made it a youth double as he maintained his winning form by storming around two laps of the course for an untroubled win despite it being his first race in the older category.

Jackie Roberts kept the wins coming for the club as she was first over the line in the veterans ladies and in the men's class John Pierce finished just off the podium in fourth, a result replicated by Stefano De Tomaso in the masters race for riders under 40.

In the grand veterans event Chris Denman returned to mountain bike racing and grabbed the final podium spot with team-mate Ian Petherbridge in sixth.

Martin Delves made his debut for the team in the sports race, claiming third and in the same event Tim Smith found the going tough on his comeback and finished in 25th.

Russ Watts was 21st in the fun event on his race debut, Ben O'Connor was seventh and Paolo Ditale 87th in the open class, while Michelle Youngman finished 13th in the women's open.
