CHELSEA continued their miserable run of form by throwing away another lead to lose 2-1 in Leverkusen.

Andre Villas-Boas lined-up further awkward questions for himself, with a team performance that lacked creativity, imagination and penetration. And what's more: Chelsea defended as poorly as they have at any time in recent years.

A dire first half looked to be picking up when, shortly after the break, an angled pass from Daniel Sturridge found Didier Drogba in the box.

In a move redolent of some of his best play for Chelsea, the Ivorian (pictured) turned and shot with a sweeping drive into the back of the net.

But Chelsea never looked especially good value for their lead, and quickly relinquished the advantage. Sub Eren Derdiyok, with his first touch of the ball, headed in a Sidney Sam ball to make things all square.

Chelsea coasted, rather than looking to seize back the initiative and, come injury time, they were punished.

A Gonzalo Castro corner found the head of Manuel Friedrich, and Blues were powerless to resist.

Chelsea must now beat Valencia at Stamford Bridge next month to be sure of qualifying for the knock-out stage.
