TWO Dave Lawrence goals - the second with virtually the last kick - gave North Greenford United a superb 2-1 win at fellow high-flyers Camberley Town on Saturday.

It was the Surrey side's first defeat of the season after six straight wins, and was a perfect response from United, who were beaten for the first time last week by Raynes Park Vale.

In one of their most spirited performances of the season, United dominated most of the opening period, moving the ball quickly and denying Camberley time and space to settle. But Julian Sills was outstanding in a well-organised home defence.

The closest United came to scoring was on the half hour when a fine Lawrence effort hit the post and he was unable to keep the ball down when it came back to him at an awkward height.

United did not have it all their own way and keeper Gary Jallow made three top-drawer reaction saves in quick succession to keep it goalless at the break - including a remarkable double save when a Gavin Muir strike was followed up by Hinga Amara.

United took the lead after 53 minutes. Luc Kenny picked up the ball midway inside the Camberley half before producing a mazy dribble past several home defenders. His shot fired from the edge of the box was parried by home keeper Justin Gray, but Lawrence was on hand to fire the rebound into the empty net.

Camberley came close to levelling on several occasions from set pieces before finally beating Jallow with a little over 15 minutes to play.

Town's dangerous right-sided midfielder, Ronnie Green, got the better of the United defence, beating two players before crossing for striker Gavin Muir to head clinically home.

In an exciting finale, both teams had chances to win it. Michael Murray and Lawrence narrowly failed to convert good scoring opportunities for United and it

seemed the visitors had missed the chance to leave Krooner Park with all three points.

But a rare mistake in the Camberley defence saw the ball fall to Lawrence again, who, from a tight angle, managed to steer the ball inside the far post.

On Saturday, United have an FA Vase first round tie with Cockfosters, the team that knocked them out of the FA Cup in August.
