TWO Brunel University athletes received Excellent Achievement awards from double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes in recognition of their performances in 2009.
Tara Bird and Emma Pallant have both been members of Dame Kelly's On Camp with Kelly mentoring and education initiative for talented young middle distance athletes, supported by Aviva, since 2006.
The two were presented with their award at a recent get-together, where the athletes learned about the importance of good nutrition for physical and mental performance from Dame Kelly and celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott.
Seventeen athletes received awards and Dame Kelly said: "It is fantastic to present so many On
Camp with Kelly awards as it shows the success of the athletes who are part of the initiative.
"I would like to congratulate Tara, Emma and their coaches on their excellent seasons and I am sure they will continue to progress in 2010."
Bird began 2009 by winning bronze in the 800m at the Aviva UK Indoor Championships and was selected for the GB 4x400m squad for the European Athletics Indoor Championships. She won the British Universities 400m indoor title and 800m outdoor title and was selected for the European Athletics U23 Championships.
That followed victory in the Aviva England U23 Championships in a new personal best and championship best performance of 2mins 3secs.
Pallant was also successful at the British Universities Championships, winning the 3,000m indoor title, and gold in the 1500m and silver in the 5,000m outdoors.
She improved her 1500m best to 4.09.96 in Morocco in May and won the England U23 1500m title, before finishing seventh in the final at the European Athletics U23 Championships.
