ST BENEDICT'S School beat neighbours St Paul's 27-18 last week to progress to the sixth round of the U18 Daily Mail National Cup.

The Ealing boys put in a great first-half attacking performance to lead 15-6 at the interval.

After four minutes, an individual try by scrum half and captain Jonah Holmes provided the perfect start.

He ran half the length of the pitch to touch down under the posts.

Saints dominated territory and possession and although St Paul's kicked two penalties to keep the score tight, a truer reflection of the balance of play came before the interval. An attempted clearance by the St Paul's fly half was charged down and winger Jacob GracieBurrow was on hand to gather up and dive over in the corner.

Minutes later, a penalty by fly half Ross McIntosh eased Benedict's

further ahead to 15-6, and superb handling among the backs led to centre Matt Dever scoring under the posts soon after the interval to extend the lead to 16 points.

St Paul's responded with sustained pressure and only excellent defensive work kept them out.

Ealing flankers, Joe Wellings and Tomek Cole, and No 8 Jamie Harries were superb in the rucks and mauls, winning vital turnovers.

Pack leader Saul Gerald also inspired with some fearsome forward charges. Just when it seemed St Paul's must score from a ruck two metres from the Benedict's line, a breakout initiated by lock Elias Choueifati ended with centre Charlie Jewers going over for a fantastic team try. Two late St Paul's touchdowns did not affect the outcome.

Saints coach Nick Guise said: "The basis for this win was our summer tour to New Zealand. We don't have a big squad to choose from but there is great fitness and spirit in this team. In the end it was certainly our superior tactics and our defence that won the game for us."
