Chiswick's Michael Hoare and ex-Brunel student Dan Shingles helped England to a 1-1 draw against Spain in their opening World Cup match.

Both players started Saturday's match but they couldn't quite aid their side in getting over the line in Holland - after England had dominated the opening half.

They took the lead after six minutes through Hoare's Wimbledon Hockey Club team-mate Alistair Brogdon and despite dominating proceedings could not build on their advantage going into the break.

And they were pegged back just two minutes into the second period when Eduard Tubau got the faintest of touches on a ball fired into the circle from long-range.

Both sides had chances to grab a winner but in the end they had to settle for a share of the spoils.

England head coach, Bobby Crutchley, said: “The game showed a lot of what we’re about. There was some really good hockey in there and we created plenty of chances.

"We played particularly well in the first half and then we lost some control in the second half and that’s when they put us under pressure, but overall we played very well.

“We’re a bit frustrated not to win having created so many chances, but it’s a long tournament and they are a good team so one point is a decent start and we’ll move on and build on it for India on Monday."
