Hundreds of youngsters from Hillingdon did the borough proud at Europe’s largest annual youth sports event.

Competing at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games finals at Crystal Palace, they shared weightlifting gold with Ealing and won silver in female table tennis, female football and netball.

The borough also took bronze in male table tennis.

Hillingdon’s superb weightlifting team was helped to first place by siblings Se and Sorcha Gavin.

Both competitors lifted more than their own bodyweight in the jerk with Se lifting 135kg and Sorcha lifting 64kg.

Team manager Kazem Panjavi’s, who coached four boroughs at the games including Hillingdon, said: “It’s always very tight between the teams. Two years ago we had the same result, and last year was close as well.

“The standard is getting better and better. Both Ealing and Hillingdon have national record holders at their level.

“Se Gavin and my son [Kian, Ealing] are part of the national team. They are going to the European championships next week.”

Following eight months of competitions between over 100,000 young Londoners representing 33 boroughs across 31 sports, the borough placed sixth overall in the Jubilee Trophy standings.

British 100m record holder Dina Asher-Smith and Rugby World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi were among the former London Youth Games competitors who attended the weekend, sharing the responsibility of lighting the flame at the opening ceremony.

Around 15,000 young Londoners aged 8 to 18 competed at the finals across 19 sports following in the hallowed footprints of Olympic champions such as Mo Farah and Christine Ohuruogu, England footballers Rio Ferdinand and Raheem Sterling and one million others who have taken part since the first ever London Youth Games in 1977.
