A DETERMINED team of golf ladies from Haste Hill fought off stiff competition to win the prestigious Whitewebbs Golden Jubilee Shield.

Sheila Smith, Diana Wallace, Reggie Milaszkiewicz, Carole Thung, Mina Kotecha and reserve player Christa Marsh-Duba, came through three matches to reach the regional final of the competition organised by The National Association of Public Golf Courses, which 54 teams entered.

They edged past Huntswood, Burnham, to claim one of four places in the national final at Malkins Bank Golf Club in Cheshire where they defeated Birmingham club Hilltop 4-1 and then Surrey's Mitcham 3.5-2.5 to lift the trophy.

The club's lady captain, Sue Katz, said: "This is the first time that the Haste Hill Ladies have won this important competition and it was the excellent team spirit and determination of all the members of the team which enabled them to triumph in the final."
