Andy Murray would have been impressed with the never-say-die attitude of Hammersmith & Fulham in the London Youth Games ParaGames tennis competition last week.

Some of the team members were in the Last Chance Saloon to win gold. But they came through their group unbeaten with three impressive victories over Westminster, Hillingdon and Enfield.

In the semi-final they faced Haringey, and secured a 3-1 victory against the North Londoners - the surprise of their group.

In the final they were faced yet again by neighbours Westminster, who defeated defending champions Hackney in their semi-final. However, it was deja vu for H&F with another 3-1 win.

Team manager Richard Freitas was delighted with his players in year nine and under.

“For a couple of those boys, it’s their third year and they really wanted to go home with gold,” he said.

“For all but one of them it’s their last year, so I’m really happy that they could get gold before retiring from the youth games.

“I knew we had a good squad, we came here two months ago and did very well in the tournament so I knew we had a chance, didn’t say that to them but I did think we could win it.

“It’s a gold medal, and you don’t get many of those in life so it’s definitely a very worthwhile and important tournament.”
