HARROW Athletic Club's senior men made a great start to the summer season with a convincing victory in the opening Southern Men's League Division Two fixture at Colchester on Saturday,

Harrow were promoted from Division Three last year and were expecting a tough baptism at the higher level, but they swept aside the opposition, winning by 30 points from the host team with Dartford, Ealing and Winchester well back.

Kadeem Greenidge-Smith was the star of the show, winning the long jump with a massive 7.05 leap, and also taking the 100 metres in a brisk 11.0. He was well supported by his training partner, Stefan Greenidge, who won both "B" string events.

Sonny Flynn showed impressive early season form to win the 400m in a fast 50.7 while Peter Norris won the 3,000m steeplechase, having already picked up valuable points in the 800 and 1500.

Ian Smart won the pole vault with a four metres clearance while David Sketchley took the javelin with a good 56.71 throw.

Harrow welcomed back former NYAL champion Howard Lamb, after an absence of several years, and he was second in the shot with a more than useful 11.73 putt, and also scored good points in the other three throws. Noel Reid also started the season well, winning the high jump with 1.85 metres. Harrow also won both relays.

Meanwhile, Harrow's youngsters made a solid start to their UK Young Athletes League Southern Premier Division campaign, placing third in the opening fixture at Bannister on Sunday. The hosts finished behind national champions Blackheath and local rivals Shaftesbury but well clear of Team Dorset.

Jerome Musa-Lawal was a double winner, taking both under 17 sprints, while James Okeyemi showed great early season form, winning the triple jump with an impressive 13.45 jump.

Luke Roach-Christie was made 'man-of the-match' for his superb under 15 shot win, recording a superb 14.49, a national grade one standard. He also took the discus and hammer for a triple victory. Kyle Meadows won the javelin. Ed David was an impressive winner of the 400m, clocking 55.8, while Ciprian Owen-Edmonds took the sprint hurdles,

Salim Muhammed won both U13 sprints, with fast times of 13.1 and 27.9 Owen Hurcom and Kai Hammond won the 800 and 1,500 respectively while Jonathan Hill took the sprint hurdles and Miles McGillivary won the shot.

Brittany Lloyd won the U17 ladies triple jump while Kimberley Osuji took the U15 discus and Kaira Shetty cleared 1.15 to win the U13 high jump.

BLOB Queens Park Harriers got their Southern League Division Three campaign underway with third place at Crawley on Saturday.

Debutant Rahimullah Whaedi put on a display of 800m running and clocked 2.09 for third position. In the 400m he finished second just outside his PB to finish in a time of 52.2 seconds and third in the 200m in 22.2.

Two others making their Harriers debuts Shagan Soni (3rd) and Keith Backhus (4th in 100m and 3rd in long jump) were happy with their efforts.

In the 300m steeple chase, Brendan Greene set the pace and left all the other runners in his wake in 11.06.7.

In the B race James Walerych, in his first season in the U20s, ran a PB in 13.06 in the steeple chase.

Another multi-eventer Damian Bastick prevailed in the shot put B string, B triple jump and 110m hurdles and also fared well in the high jump (4th), B pole vault (2nd), 400m hurdles (3rd) and discus A string (3rd).

Harold Lisk Jnr won the A triple jump and finished third in the long jump A string while Ray Gallagher marked his return after a year long illness with runners up in the A string hammer (30m50) and fourth in the shot (9m08).

Andy Argus (20.33) and Richard Davis (22.19) secured third places in the 5,000m; Barry Smith came fourth in the B 200m race in 28.7; Michael Dmitrzak's 4.42 time earned him fourth place in the 1,500m.
