There is concern that not only will Mo Farah miss this weekend’s Sainsbury’s Grand Prix in Glasgow - a mystery stomach illness could force him out of a return there in the Commonwealth Games 16 days from now.
The Feltham double Olympic champion was due to race two miles - the show-stopping final event on Saturday, but was admitted to hospital in the USA with abdominal pain, where he trains, and has since undergone tests with a worried British Athletics medical team.
Farah’s appearance at the Grand Prix event, which forms part of the IAAF Diamond League series, would have been his first on the track in front of a home crowd in 2014.
“Sorry to everyone in Scotland but I won’t be able to make it there this week,” he said.
“I hope to resume training in the next few days and aim to run in the London Anniversary Games on July 20 and then the Commonwealth Games the following week.”
The 31-year-old made a winning return to track action last month when he clocked 13:23.42 for 5,000m victory at the low-key Portland Track Festival following his London marathon debut in April that left him marginally disappointed.
Farah will be seeking another double triumph as he attempts to become the first in history to claim the full set of championship 5,000m and 10,000m titles.
