THE AGONISING wait for the final scores was almost as hard as the round itself as far as Fulham's Harry Bloomfield was concerned.

But when the golfer discovered he and partner Rob Cramsie were on their way to Tenerife next month to contest the world final of the Audi quattro Cup having left

78,000 competitors in their wake, the trek to deepest Dartmoor suddenly became worth it.

And Bloomfield has a chance to keep the trophy in west London following on from 2008's win in Spain by Kensington's Edward Greenhalgh and Mike Williams.

The Fulham golfer, who plays at Sunningdale off an eight handicap, was kept in suspense until the announcement at the awards dinner last week after the UK Audi final at Bovey Castle in Dartmoor.

Even then, their score was a mere single point ahead of runners-up Paul Atkinson and Neil Tibble from Ipswich - 37 to 36.

Had there been a tie, the second-placers would have won after posting a superior second nine total under Stableford rules.

"I thought we had blown it," said Bloomfield. "We scored badly on the last few holes, and the agonising wait until the awards dinner just added to the apprehension. But we were elated when they said Rob and I had won. We're ready to take on the world!"

The pair will now pack sand wedges and sunscreen for the trip to the luxurious ABAMA resort for the 17th edition of the competition that saw the majority of 51 countries, 750 heats and 78,000 golfers whittled down to Bloomfield, Cramsie and a select few.
