EX LIVERPOOL and Eire defender Phil Babb has been chosen as the man to lead Hayes & Yeading United Football Club into their next chapter in the Conference South.

In naming his first team manager, the club said he was 'head and shoulders' above other candidates, with an impressive knowledge of the club and desire to build up a career in management.

Babb has an impressive playing CV, having made more than 400 senior appearances in 17 years as a professional footballer, gained 35 international caps, appeared in two Wembley Cup Finals (including the 1996 FA Cup) and made two Champions League appearances.

Director of Football Tony O'Driscoll said: "What we have always aspired to for this football club is to recruit people who are in it for the right reasons and have the club right at their heart.

“Phil immediately impressed us all with what he knew about us, our players and the level we are playing at. He has an incredible knowledge of the game across all levels and shares our vision in building the club the correct way."

Currently a UEFA-B licensed coach, 42 year old Babb will be supported by a coaching team already known to United supporters. Staying on at the club will be assistant manager Tristan Lewis and reserve team manager Delroy Preddie.

Babb said: "I'm really excited about this opportunity to put to use my years of experience, plus the knowledge of non-league and lower league football that I have gained in recent years.

“I followed closely the fortunes of the club last year, and recognise the bags of potential it has and like its forward-thinking approach.

“I've watched many games at this level and know what a tough division it is, but believe I have the skills to help in the building of a successful club and nurture some great young talent."

Babb added: "I have worked with coaches from across the world and rarely do you see the combination of the thirst for knowledge and passion that both Tristan and Delroy have displayed to me. I recognise their commitment to this club, and value that as a great asset in my taking the first team manager's job here at Hayes & Yeading United."

Hayes & Yeading United will begin their second successive season in the Conference South this August, when they hope to return to their own ground in Hayes, following two seasons ground-sharing at Woking FC, while The Sharda Glass Community Stadium has been re-developed.
