Fiona Kennedy repeated last year's win in the over 50s category at the South of England Veterans Cross Country Championships and led the Ealing Southall & Middlesex women's over 45s team to bronze medals.

Kennedy held a narrow lead over Patricia Thomas and Gill Morgan after the first small lap of the Biggleswade course - the venue having switched from Ruislip, where the event has been staged for the past two years.

But she pulled away to eventually finish 12th overall and win her sixth age group title in these championships.

Thomas had another strong run to end up 22nd overall, and sixth in the over 40 age group.

Morgan struggled with a back problem in the latter stages and dropped to 43rd. With Carol Jones coming home in 58th, the over 45 team only just missed out on silver medals.

Nikki Baker returned from flu to finish 86th, with Julia Gristwood not far behind.

The men's championships were split into two races, starting with the over 50 men. With two runners out because of injuries, only three men from the club started the first race.

Steve Plested was the first home yet again, finishing 35th overall. John Falvey made steady progress throughout the race but lost a couple of places on the run in. He was 65th. Alan Keeler completed the line up in 95th.

Bill Gristwood was the club's only runner in the 40-49 years race. He finished 40th, only slightly down on last year's position. His time would have placed him 10th in the over 50 race - a category for which he is close to qualifying.
