ANOTHER dominant display and a fifth clean sheet of the season kept North Greenford United on top of the Combined Counties League.

A goal in each half from Ryan Welsh and Jamie Diston - his first of the season - gave United a comfortable 2-0 win at Epsom & Ewell.

From the outset, United looked the more dangerous of the two sides.

Chris Hibbs narrowly missed the target with a fine effort and only a desperate goal-line clearance denied Michael Murray, who sent in a looping shot from 20 yards after keeper Paul Borg had been drawn out of position to block a Dave Lawrence shot.

The opening goal wasn't long in coming though, and on 19 minutes Welsh darted in to meet a Luc Kenny cross to power in a header at the near post.

Greenford once again looked sharper after the break and quickly extended their lead.

Welsh won a free-kick out on the right on the edge of the Epsom box and Murray struck a fierce low drive across the six yard line for centre back Diston to bury into the roof of the net.

United continued to produce attractive flowing football, but although Lawrence and Murray came close on a couple of occasions, they were unable to extend their lead further.

For the most part, the home side were denied clear-cut scoring opportunities, although striker Robbie Burns did fire against a post from the edge of the United box.

This coming Saturday, United have a home league fixture against Guildford City.

The following week - on November 14 - the team will again by playing at Berkeley Fields, this time in the second round FA Vase tie against Daventry Town.
