Although Sheree Cox has every chance of landing a Commonwealth Games medal, her dad fears she will never get the chance to live her Olympic dream.

Gary Cox believes his daughter, who learnt her trade at Heston & Hounslow Rifle Club as she grew up in nearby Ashford, will always face an uphill struggle due to the lack of funding for English shooters.

Sheree's talent is without question – she will be the only English female to take part in two shootings events in Glasgow, the air rifle and smallbore rifle 3 position.

She also featured at the 2010 games in Delhi while still a teenager, but casts an envious eye at the funding enjoyed her fiancee, Welsh shooter and Melbourne 2006 double medallist David Phelps, who she will marry in August.

Dad Gary said: “The good thing about the Commonwealth Games is it won't have all the world's best shooters, like the Americans, the Chinese and the Russians, so Sheree has an excellent chance of getting a medal.

Another shot: Glasgow will be Cox's second Commonwealth Games

“But she is still up against it. The rest of the world's shooters laugh at us as they train every day of the year and are full time professionals, whereas Sheree has to work as a chiropractor to pay for her training, and after the Games she will have to do more hours.

“The funding they get goes in cycles, kicks in every four years to get them up to scratch for the Olympics, but then they have three years plus of no cash coming in.

“We found the training facilities to be so bad in England that she trains in Cardiff, where her boyfriend lives. He is fully funded, as are Scottish shooters. The Welsh and Scottish Assemblies choose to fund their athletes, but our government can't do the same for English ones as it's the UK government. We have to rely on Sport England and UK Sport.

“As a result, we have to pick and choose what events we can afford to go to. In order to qualify for the Olympics in 2016, you earn a quota through international tournament, but a lot of the time they are events our shooters cannot afford to go to.”

Sheree gets the odd bit of funding help from the Jaguar Academy, but will be in need of regular sponsorship to compete with the world's best. Anyone who can help should contact Gary Cox at: garycox.athome@gmail.com.
