DESPITE competing in a senior event, U17 athlete Laura Burke set a new 300m hurdles club record for Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow AC last weekend.

Burke set a new club best of 44 seconds flat in the opening Southern Women’s League Premier meeting at Reading.

U20 athlete Rachel Stedman sliced more than four seconds off her personal best as she won the 1500m in 53.7 secs, while new signing Anita White blasted away the opposition in winning the javelin with a throw of 42.46m.

There were also double victories in the pole vault for U20 Sophie Upton and U17 Lily-Mae Fisher, and for U20 duo Jo Botwright and Laura James in the discus.

There were wins in the relays too, with Burke, Bex Myers, Caroline Heaney and Sophie Purkiss finishing more than 40m in the lead in the 4x400m, and Cat Hall-Jones Chanel Taite, Sarah Phelps and Georgia Lamothe setting a sub-50 second time in the 4x100m.

Despite these scintillating displays, last year’s champions finished in last place and have it all to do to retain their crown.

But the team management put it down to their decision to give their U17 and U20 athletes some serious competition ahead of three important National Young Athletes League meetings this month.

Coach Irene Speller said: "We had a very young senior team doing battle against more mature athletes, and the final placing belies some very good performances."
