BRENTFORD had to make do with an opening day point at Port Vale this afternoon despite taking the lead through a first half Shaleum Logan block-buster.

Doug Loft has first sight of goal for the hosts but fired over from the edge of area, while Clayton Donaldson was also over from just inside the box after creating some space for himself with a couple of twists and turns.

Adam Forshaw's shot was weak after finding himself with more time than he thought inside the area from Will Grigg's pass, while Grigg himself was just off-target after nicking the ball off Adam Yates.

Tom Pope then headed against the post from a deep cross from Daniel Jones, but it was Brentford who took the lead on 26 minutes when a promising Brentford attack broke down and the ball found it way back out to Logan, who cuts inside Jones and unleashed a brilliant strike into the far top corner.

The lead was to last just five minutes however as Loft, who minutes earlier shot narrowly wide from a long throw into the box, equalised at second attempt after Brentford failed to clear their lines.

Donaldson saw a shot blocked in the area as the teams went in level at the break, and the same player was inches from putting Brentford back in front eight minutes into the second half when his chip from George Saville's sublime cross-field ball came back off the bar with home keeper Chris Neal beaten.

A combination of Neal and Jones then stopped Donaldson when the Brentford man had seemed certain to score after being put clear by Grigg, while soon after it was Grigg's turn to be denied by a Yates block in the area.

Grigg was then wasteful when, with 15 minutes left, Donaldson burst into the area and laid the back to the former Walsall man, only for him to blaze wildly over, before the same player was denied by a block from another Donaldson pull-back.

Neal saved well at the feet of Donaldson from another lovely Saville through-ball, while a shot from sub Jake Reeves on the break deflected wide off a team-mate, but the Bees had to make do with a share of the spoils.

BEES: Button, Logan, Dean, O'Connor, Bidwell, Forshaw (Reeves 80), Saville, McCormack, Donaldson, Grigg, McAleny (Fillo 71). Subs not used: Bonham, Saunders, Venta, Hayes, Nugent.
