BOSS Andy Scott insisted he is proud of his Brentford players after the club's best League Cup run in almost 30 years came to end at St Andrews on Tuesday night.

The Bees were just two minutes of injury time away from adding the scalp of Birmingham City to that of their Premiership rivals Everton.

But while Scott's men put out the Toffeemen on penalties in the last round, they were second best from the spot against Brum.

Scott said: "I am proud, but very disappointed too as I don't think anybody would deny we deserved to win it in the 90 minutes.

"We've restricted a good Premiership side to a few chances, and we hardly gave Kevin Phillips a kick before he equalised in injury time.

"But it was a silly foul to give away for their goal, especially when we'd had the chance to keep the ball in the corner moments before.

"Nobody expected us to come this far, but we are hard to beat and have set some good standards these last few weeks. The cup run has galvanised us after a poor start, and we need to now take this form back into the league."
