James DeGale’s trainer predicts there will be a third meeting between his man and George Groves - but not before each has a world title tucked under his belt.

Jim McDonnell oversaw a fabulous Wembley win for DeGale when he floored unbeaten American Brandon Gonzales in the fourth round on Saturday.

Both trainer and winner then watched Hammersmith’s George Groves take the same trip to the canvas after he was dramatically knocked out in the eighth round of his world title tilt against Carl Froch.

Knockout: The end for Groves

McDonnell believes promoter Eddie Hearn will make good promises to give DeGale a shot at Froch’s IBF title rather than head to Las Vegas and a contest with Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr.

He also insists his boxer will beat Froch, while Groves will recover from his awful night and claim a different crown elsewhere.

McDonnell said: “Looking at it from George Groves’s point of view, he’s just got stopped in his last two fights.

“He’s signed with the Germans (Sauerland), and could be looking at a low-key comeback before meeting the winner of Arthur Abrahams and Paul Smith for the WBO title. Then he can bring something back to the table and fight James.”

McDonnell claimed Groves turned down £1million to face DeGale after the former controversially edged their first professional contest three years ago. Saint George also won their one amateur bout back in 2006.

But Chunky’s trainer reckons once the Harlesden fighter has taken care of Froch, there’s big money waiting for Degale v Groves, part three.

McDonnell explained: “It’s promoter’s dream, of course it is. All of a sudden, when Chunky beats Froch, you have a massive fight on your hands.”
