Dale Youth ABC took the junior boxing world by storm at the weekend to earn two golds and a silver at what is the new forerunner to the Junior ABA Championships.

In the brave new world of English boxing, those with fewer than 10 bouts to their name competed for the right to be in Rotherham at the National Junior Development finals.

Ray Corcoran, Ray Cunningham and Keith O’Donoghue from the North Kensington club had already battled through earlier rounds before climbing through the ropes at the Magna Centre.

Delighted: Gary McGuinness (R)

After a terrific bout in which he was already a clear winner, 48-50kg Corcoran dropped Josh Wilkinson from the Plains Farm club in Sunderland for an eight count to add the cherry on top of an emphatic display.

Up a couple of weights, 57-60kg Cunningham took on the much-fancied Thomas Fraughan from Knowsley Vale in Liverpool.

Straight shots from the gun rocked the Merseysider, and a crisp performance from there on ensured a second national win for Dale.

In the 75kgs-80kgs bout O’Donoghue lost a majority verdict to Jamie Hercus from Essex University.

Dale coach Gary McGuinness said: “Two out of three was a great reward. There’s plenty more to come from all three boys.”
