Jez Smith has challenged his brother to match his achievements after being crowned national champion in the Royal Navy Schools Championships last weekend.

The 15-year-old beat Knowsley Vale's Thomas Wilson in the Class Three, 40kg category at Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, despite a shaky start.

He was 0-2 down in the first round but rallied to lead 4-3 by the end of the second after a show of controlled aggression. The teenager, from Sefton Avenue in Wealdstone, held his nerve to win 6-5. It was a sweet victory for Smith who was a losing finalist in last year's comepetition.

The Hatch End High School pupil was cheered on by his father and assistant coach John, and his older brother Mitchell, 16.

Mitchell is a 2008 Clubs for Young People national boxing champion after beating all before him in the Class A, 44-46kg category. He is also a member of Bushey ABC, and is through to the semi-finals of this year's competition, where he will face Barnsley's Roy Anderson in the Class B, Under 50kg category on Saturday.
