KENTON Road Club riders Des Gayler and Carl Bond rode in different races over the weekend but coincidently were both placed fifth in their respective events.
Saturday saw Bond racing in the Beds Road CC 10 mile time trial near St Neots, Cambridgeshire. An early start of 6.55am required the alarm to go off at 4.15am before his drive out to the race HQ. His time at the finish was 22.48, slowed slightly by a menacing wind.
Bond said: "The prizes only went down to fourth and that rider finished just one second quicker than me." Winner Mark Cook (Planet X) finished in 21.49. Gayler was also up early on Sunday morning to drive to Kent for the VC Deal LVRC race, one of the south east yellow jersey competition series. Fifty starters fought it out in the A/B/C category race over 58 miles.
In a fast race Gayler made several abortive attacks. At the line he was placed fifth overall and fourth in his own age category.
