STAND-IN skipper Alan Bennett helped Brentford land the League Two title – then vowed to stick around next season. The on-loan Reading centre-back has been a revelation at Griffin Park this year, helping them to 19 clean sheets on their way to promotion.

Bennett is a free agent in the summer after being told he has no future with Steve Coppell's side.

And the Irishman, who has played twice for his country, says he wants a permanent move to west London.

He said: "I'd love to stay, but there are a lot of factors. This is my first full season in English football.

"I've had four clubs in two seasons, but this is the first place I've felt at home since I left Cork. That's a hard feeling to replace, and it means a lot. I hope something can get sorted out."

Bennett grabbed his first goal of the season in the 3-1 win at Darlington on Saturday.

And the 27-year-old, a League of Ireland winner with Cork City, admits Andy Scott's side's achievement is one of the highlights of his career.

"It's up there," he added. "There was tension before the game and it's a relief. The emotions are hard to describe.

"It was special leading the side home, and to score my first goal was great. I'm absolutely delighted."
