Heston disability athlete Kyle Powell will today (Friday) be taking part in the Sainsbury’s 2014 School Games – a major multi-sport event for elite youngsters.

The 18-year-old former Cranford Community School pupil is one of 1,600 youngsters competing at the event over four days in Manchester, with his sprint events taking place today.

Powell recently claimed silver medals in the T45 100m and 200m at the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation World Junior Games at the Stoke Mandeville stadium.

In with a shout: Kyle Powell in action

He said: “I am really looking forward to the School Games as I went last year and had an amazing time. My aim is to bring home two medals in the ambulant 100m and 200m. I can’t wait to compete with my team and cheer them on.”

Past School Games competitors who have gone on to experience sporting success at a senior level include Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Ellie Simmonds and Jonnie Peacock.

Ahead of the Games, people in Hounslow are being urged to get behind Kyle via the Sainsbury’s 'Show your Support' campaign, where people can pledge their messages of support, either online by using #2014SSG or on the campaign website www.2014schoolgames.com/support. The messages will be broadcast on a giant screen on the ‘Show your Support’ bus.
