Hanwell Town recorded a relatively comfortable 3-0 win against relegation strugglers Brimsdown Rovers on Saturday to keep alive their outside chance of League honours, writes Bob Fisher.

The best of the early chances fell to Brimsdown, Jamie-Lee O'Donoghue firing wide when well placed and skipper Charlie Moxom sending a weak shot straight at Town keeper Keiran Jimmy. But as the half progressed, Town began to gain the upper hand.

They took the lead in the 33rd minute with a well rehearsed training ground freekick routine that had been tried several times already this season without success.

On this occasion, however, the crisp free-kick by Chris Mills played into the path of Jason Tucker was moved on Blaise O'Brien, and Town's leading goalscorer notched his 22nd goal of the season.

In the period leading up to the interval, Town won a succession of corner kicks as the Brimsdown goal came under increasing pressure and their keeper Scott Montgomery did well to turn a dipping shot from Mills over the crossbar.

Town continued to be in the ascendancy in the second half and scored the all important second goal in the 53rd minute when a misplaced clearance fell to Warren Williams some 40 yards from goal.

Showing great vision, Williams crossed the ball instantly to the far post where the unmarked George Mapes had time to control the ball before steering it past the help-less Montgomery.

Fifteen minutes later, it was 3-0 when Tucker's through ball found Mapes again in the clear down the left flank and he cut inside before firing the ball into the far corner of the net.

In the final minutes, Town missed several good opportunities to improve their goal difference, Montgomery making a fine save from O'Brien while substitute Lucasz Ciezarek scooped the ball over an empty net when it seemed easier to score.

This Saturday (3pm), Town are at home to Kingsbury London Tigers at Reynolds Field. [25a0] On Tuesday night, Town produced a very spirited performance in their Middlesex Senior Cup Second Round tie against Ryman Premier Division side Ashford Town but were beaten 3-2.

Ashford, fresh from scoring five goals in their League game at the weekend. dominated the opening stages and took the lead when Scott Harris headed home from close range from a corner.

Two minutes later, Harris scored again with a fierce volley after a clever flicked header by Gavin Smith.

It seemed Town were in for a heavy defeat but those fears were quickly dispelled in the opening minutes of the second half when Blaise O'Brien reduced the deficit from a cross by Warren Williams.

Ashford regained their two goal lead through Adam Logie but with 15 minutes remaining, Matt Kidson headed home a Chris Mills free-kick to set up a grandstand finish.

And Town almost drew level when a header by O'Brien hit the crossbar and his follow-up effort was blocked by Ashford keeper Craig Ross.
