A MAKESHIFT Hayes & Yeading United team shocked Conference Premier strugglers Grays Athletic 2-0 to reach the FA Trophy Second Round Proper at Church Road last night (Tuesday 17/12).

Tom Cadmore’s thumping header from a corner put United, missing numerous players through injury, ahead in the 14th minute and the skipper went on to lead from the back as the hosts went from strength to strength.

United doubled the lead when James Mulley left Grays keeper David Button bewildered with a 25-yard screamer midway through the second half, while Josh Scott saw a brilliant individual strike chalked off in stoppage time, presumably for a pull on the last man, moments before Wesley Thomas sliced Grays’ best chance of the match disastrously wide.

United now travel to Conference North title hopefuls AFC Telford United in the next round on January 10.
