Hayes & Yeading United put their league troubles aside for the day when they travel to play AFC Telford United in the second round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

United have taken just 12 points from a possible 36 since they beat AFC Wimbledon to go top of Conference South in September, sliding down the table to eighth as a result.

By contrast their Trophy form in that time has been excellent as they followed a superb 4-1 win over league leaders Chelmsford City, courtesy of Kieran Knight's four-goal salvo, with another highly impressive 2-0 defeat of Conference Premier side Grays Athletic, despite being severely restricted by injuries.

This weekend they embark on their first away journey in the competition as they bid to reach the last 16 and Conference North side Telford will arguably pose a greater test than Grays, who are struggling in the league above.

The Shropshire club is currently third in their league, two points off the top - a campaign founded on the best defensive record in the division with only three defeats and 14 goals conceded in 21 games.

They saw off league rivals Gainsborough Trinity (2-0) and Boston United (2-1) of the Northern Premier League, both away from home, to reach this stage.

They also made the first round of the FA Cup where they took Football League One side Southend United to a replay.

The current club was formed by supporters in 2004 when Telford United, a Conference side at the time, folded. Since then they have won two promotions and as the best supported team in their league by far, with home gates of around 2,000 which is twice as many as nearest rival King's Lynn, they are on course for a rapid return to the previous club's level.

Places are still available to Supporters' Club members on the coach to Telford.

Tickets cost £15 and the coach leaves Church Road at 10.30am.
