Ethan Ampadu, the Exeter defender who made his debut against Brentford last year at the age of 15, has signed for Chelsea.

The 16-year-old, who made 13 appearances for the League Two play-off finalists, has agreed terms with the Premier League champions.

Because he had not signed scholarship forms, the Grecians can't collect a transfer fee but Exeter are entitled to compensation, which they hope will be agreed without the need for tribunal.

Ampadu, who has been capped by Wales at U17 and U19 level made his debut against the Bees in the League Cup and broke the club's appearance record that had been held by Cliff Bastin for 83 years.

The defender was impressive throughout the tie and silenced Brentford striker Philipp Hofmann, while also keeping hotshot Scott Hogan quiet and was awarded the man of the match award.

Bees fans were impressed by his performances and he also caught the eye of the Premier League champions, who moved to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
