Tiago has ended speculation linking him with a return to Chelsea by signing a new contract at Atletico Madrid.

Three of last Atletico stars will be turning out at Stamford Bridge next season as the Blues have pinched Filipe Luis and Diego Costa while Thibaut Courtois’ loan has come to an end.

Rumours had been swirling that experienced midfielder Tiago, who played for Chelsea in 2004-05 under Jose Mourinho, would arrive to see that number rise to four.

The 33-year-old was a free agent after his deal expired in June but he has this week agreed fresh terms to keep him at the Calderon for another two years.

Tiago said: "The club offered me the chance to renew my contract.

"I felt proud because we had had an incredible season, but I had thought it was the right time for the cycle to come to an end.

Roar: Atletico Madrid's Tiago

"I have been offered the chance to play in various international leagues and have taken some time to evaluate my options during the summer, but my final decision became clearer, and Atletico was the only option.

"El Cholo (Atletico manager Diego Simeone) always left the door open for me and I am now very happy that I have made the right decision," Tiago added.

"I want to thank the club for waiting for me and offering me the opportunity to remain here.
