Southampton have completed a season-long loan for Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand - previously a target for Liverpool and Spurs.

Following last season's successful loan spell at Aston Villa, the left-back has been shipped out once more, despite Ashley Cole's departure to Roma.

The Saints have also included a clause giving them the chance to make the switch permanent if he can impress his new manager Ronald Koeman.

Koeman told Southampton’s official website: “I’m very happy to be able to bring Ryan in. I spoke to him on Monday afternoon and I was very impressed with his attitude and how keen he was to play games for Southampton.

“He is a top player who will bring a lot of quality to the team. He has experience at the highest level and is an exciting, attacking player, which is what I like to see in my full-backs.

“Left-back is an important position in the team because it is quite specialised in terms of the attributes needed to play there, so it is nice to get this signing completed because it gives us some stability.”

Meanwhile, reports in Spain, picked up over here by the Daily Star, suggest Chelsea should brace themselves for an imminent bid from Atletico Madrid for Fernando Torres.

The Blues have already signed Diego Costa and Felipe Luis from the Spanish side this season, and have been linked with Miranda too.
