QPR have given the green light for Cole Kpekawa to move to Championship rivals Barnsley - not two months after chairman Tony Fernandes Tweeted how pleased he was with the defender.

Fernandes sent the social media thumbs-up ahead of Rs pre-season tour of Holland. But the cold reality is Kpekawa is unlikely to dent a defensive squad that includes Steven Caulker, Grant Hall, Nedum Onuoha, James Perch, Jake Bidwell and Joel Lynch.

Bidwell currently holds down Kpekawa's favoured left-back slot, while Lynch can also play there too - just as head coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink wanted.

JFH endorsed the club policy of giving young players a chance, but the practicalities suggest otherwise in Kpekawa's case.

The product of the academy system made nine senior appearances for QPR, the most recent in this month’s EFL Cup game against Swindon.

He has also had spells on loan at Portsmouth, Colchester and Leyton Orient.
