Sebastian Polter is on the verge of joining QPR, Mainz manager Christian Heidel has revealed.

The 24-year-old striker spent last season on loan at 2 Bundesliga side FC Union Berlin after dropping down the pecking order at Mainz.

Berlin had hoped to sign the former U21 international but Heidel scotched their hopes and confirmed that Loftus Road remained the player's most likely destination.

He said: "Sebastian will not come back to Mainz,” before adding it was 'very likely' he'd join QPR.

Polter started his senior career with Wolfsburg before moving to Mainz in 2013. He once was forced to go in goal and made a good save from a free kick when between the sticks.

Rangers have resigned themselves to losing Charlie Austin this summer, with Newcastle the most likely destination at the moment.

It is believed the R’s are spending just over £1million to sign Polter, who scored 14 times on loan at Union Berlin while on loan in 2014-15.
