Ian Holloway was dismissive when asked how much Alex Smithies is worth.

"He's worth his place ahead of Matt Ingram right now," and that was that from the QPR boss, who knows the likes of Aston Villa would take his prized keeper in a heartbeat.

The £4 million rumoured to be on the table would have to be doubled for Rs to return the call.

Smithies denied a seventh penalty out of 10 in his time with Rangers when he stopped Chris Martin's spot-kick in the derby with Fulham on Saturday.

Post man: Matt Ingram watches a Reading shot go wide

Whites are sick of the sight of the former Huddersfield custodian who has denied them three times this season: this one and twice at the Cottage in October.

But Ollie thinks a Smithies on his game is down to the man breathing down his neck.

"Matt Ingram is fantastic," the manager said.

"He wants to come and learn, he can learn from Alex, He's been making Alex play as well as he is.

"The competition on that training ground is proper, and Alex knows that, and that's why he is playing out of his skin at the moment.

Triffic! As Harry Reknapp might say - Alex Smithies (L) saves from Wolves' Matt Doherty (R)

"This is the best group of goalies I've ever had in my life, and Matt is part of that and pushing the other one and the atmosphere out there is as good as I want the rest of the club to be.

"Now hopefully the rest of the dressing rooms, they play a different game to us.

"Different training regime, different runnings, everything's different yet they then join in and make saves for us. We need to get the rest of the club as good as that part, in my opinion."
