Brentford will undergo a summer of evolution, rather than revolution, co-director of football Phil Giles has confirmed.

The Bees made a host of changes in the summer of 2015 after the departure of manager Mark Warburton.

Giles and fellow co-director of football Rasmus Ankersen were new to their roles while the club also brought in various coaches and support staff behind the scenes, not to mention the overhaul of the squad.

With those things now in place, it is a chance for the Bees to improve on what they have, rather than rip everything up and start again.

Giles said: “I think the summer will be evolution, rather than revolution. We’ll definitely sign some players and I’ll imagine some players will leave.

“It’s the way of the world, every window. It’s important to keep the nucleus of the squad together and I think we will.”

Giles expects at least three new faces at the club through the course of the summer, although he accepts players may also move on to pastures new.

Entering final year: Jake Bidwell and David Button

The ending of the emergency loan window will also see players move to another club earlier in the window, especially at the clubs competing in Europe.

He added: “I’d say there will be a minimum of three but it depends on outgoings as well. Loans will be slightly different with the change in regulations.

“Clubs have to make an earlier decision about when players go on loan. They’ll need to make a decision fairly early.

“Once they make that decision you’ve got to have done all your planning and research. It’s all about doing your homework and getting to the front of the queue.

“You’ve got to have good relations with those clubs. There’s lots of people who can build those relationships.

“Dean (Smith) has brought in players on loan from Man City from his time at Walsall. One of the good things about Dean is that the big clubs have trusted him with their players at Walsall so the big clubs will not be afraid to trust us with their players for an extended period.

“I hope Brentford can be an attractive destination.”
