Chelsea and Manchester United have provisionally agreed the £40million sale of Juan Mata.

The two clubs have held discussions and settled on a price for the player as sources close to the deal confirmed it was almost complete.

United are yet to lodge a formal bid, according to reports this morning, but everything is in place to make the move happen in a matter of days.

Mata must of course pass a medical and agree personal terms with the champions and the Red Devils are thought to have drawn up a four-year contract for the World Cup winner.

Mata still has two years to run on his Blues contract, however he has become disillusioned after falling behind Oscar, Willian and Eden Hazard in the Stamford Bridge pecking order.

A public show of frustration after being substituted in the New Year’s Day clash with Southampton is believed to have been the tipping point. Mata has not featured since.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will have the final say, although he has already confirmed he would be willing to let the midfielder go should Mata express a desire to leave.

United are currently in seventh place in the Barclays Premier League, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal, and were beaten 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
