Frank Lampard would love to see Didier Drogba return to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues legend, who returned to his home of nine years for just one night with Galatasaray, received a hero's welcome from home fans at the Champions League match on Tuesday.

Drogba, scorer of the winning penalty in Chelsea's first Champions League triumph, received a standing ovation both before and after the 2-0 win, which saw Blues progress to this year's last eight.

Lampard, who was one of those to embrace Drogba on the final whistle, said he would be very keen to see his former team-mate return – and that it could be a realistic prospect.

“Of course I’d like to see Didier back as a coach or as a player,” said the Chelsea and England midfielder.

“The manager said before the game that you can’t see him not being part of the club in some shape or form.

“It’s up to him and the club, but he’s always going to be regarded as a legend and held in the top bracket in this club. I’m sure if he can give something back, I’m sure Didier would love to.”

Drogba was largely silenced on the pitch for his Stamford Bridge return, with Galatasaray leaving without a single shot on goal.

While revelling in Chelsea's victory, Lampard showed more than a bit of sympathy for Drogba.

“It was probably a difficult game for him,” he said. “We controlled the game and he didn’t get much service tonight.

“I think it was hard for him, but he’s still a massive threat with his power.

“Obviously we wanted to win the game, but we had a lot of respect for him coming back here and I was pleased with the reception he got.”
