Brentford should stand firm on bids for wing wizard Jota over the course of the summer.

The Spaniard is a key player for the Bees going forward and many believe, quite rightly, that keeping the 26-year-old is of vital importance to any promotion hopes.

It's no surprise that clubs, including West Ham, Everton and Burnley, have been sniffing around Brentford's Jersey Road training ground trying to prise the wing wizard away.

Jota wants to play in the Premier League or La Liga and that is quite understandable; I'd be disappointed if a player didn't have ambitions to play at the highest level.

In an ideal world, the Spaniard will agree a contract extension to keep him at the club for the next few years. There have been positive discussions so far but the end isn't in sight yet.

If no deal is agreed at this time, I would look to convince the Bees ace to give the club the first half of the season to mount a promotion challenge. This is also the stance I would take with other players out of contract next summer like Harlee Dean and Lasse Vibe.

It's a gamble on the club's side of things as the fee they'd receive in January will be a fraction of what they would receive this summer.

However, if Brentford are there or thereabouts they could then slightly loosen the purse-strings, which are understandably tight by Championship standards, and make a big push for promotion to the Premier League.

Jota is beloved by Bees fans and several would be unhappy to see him leave. A move to a Premier League side would decrease the blow. A deal with a Championship rival would be cause for meltdown amongst some levels of the support.

But, at the same time, the 26-year-old also loves the club and is thankful for the support they gave him and his family at a difficult time for him in 2016. The deal would have to be right for him and the club.

At this moment, the vibe I've picked up from Brentford is encouraging. While that can obviously change as the season draws closer, my feeling is Jota will be at Bramall Lane come August 5.
