Slavisa Jokanovic has insisted that Tom Cairney will not be signing for Newcastle this summer.

The Fulham manager has claimed that the Premier League side made a £20million move for the Cottager's star man but believes he won't be going anywhere.

The Serbian, who was speaking to the media in his native country, also spoke of his belief that Cairney did not fit in at Newcastle and St James' Park and that Fulham was the correct fit for him.

Rumours in the national press have been rife, suggesting Newcastle had made Cairney one of their main priorities, but it looks like Jokanovic is looking to keep hold of his midfielder for another season at least.

He said: "Yes, he’s good. He (Benitez) asked for him and they offered £20million, but we did not let him go.

"He is not for Newcastle, there is no business there, he fits in at Fulham.

"When the team has problems the ball always goes to him and he keeps it."

Speaking about his desire to play top flight football, Cairney said: "Every player has to back themselves to play at that level and I believe once I get there — and I hope it’s with Fulham — I really will show I can do things at that level.

"It’s all about getting there in the first place, but I do think it does suit my game."
