Neal Ardley needs to strengthen his AFC Wimbledon strikeforce ahead of the new League One season.

The Dons are making a step up in class and are doing so without the talismanic Bayo Akinfenwa and speedy sharpshooter Ade Azeez.

Akinfenwa was released by boss Neal Ardley after helping the team reach the third tier of English football while Azeez has moved north of the border to Partick Thistle.

That will leave Ardley short of options up top next term and the Dons manager is busy searching for replacements this summer.

He ran with four strikers in his Wimbledon squad last season and the firepower at his disposal made many other League Two sides envious of his attacking weaponry.

Only top goalscorer Lyle Taylor, who is not short of admirers, and tall hitman Tom Elliott remain and the departures have freed up a significant chunk of the budget.

But who could Wimbledon to turn to fill the void left by the two Adebayos? We’ve picked out five players the Dons could be considering signing.

John Akinde

Spot on! John Akinde scores for Barnet

Barnet's Akinde personifies power when on the pitch and he has a serious eye for goal after enjoying a fruitful season in north London notching 23 goals.

With the iconic Akinfenwa now gone Ardley could be after a man to assert his presence in the 18 yard box and Akinde is certainly a man capable of giving defenders problems every level he plays at.

Martin Allen would drive a hard bargain but Akinde would be worth shelling out for this summer.

Matt Tubbs

Blast from the past: Matt Tubbs in action

Tubbs made his mark for AFC Wimbledon back in 2014 when he was on loan from Bournemouth.

He netted 12 goals in his short spell and has continued to find the net at Portsmouth when given the opportunity to play.

He struggled for game time at Fratton Park last season and was sent out on loan to non-league Eastleigh for the latter half of the campaign but is a man likely in the market for a new club.

With Azeez having left for Scotland, Tubbs could inject some much needed pace into Wimbledon's attack.

Harry Smith

Options: Neal Ardley and his AFC Wimbledon strikeforce from last term

The non-league marksman netted 20 goals for Folkstone Invicta last season and has been linked with several professional clubs.

His 6ft 6in frame makes him a huge aerial threat and would offer them another outlet when chasing the game and looking to play route one.

Millwall have already taken a look at him this summer.

Joe Piggott

Joe Piggott of Charlton Athletic celebrates

Now a free agent after being released by Charlton, Pigott is wanted man Luton after spending some of last season on loan at Kenilworth Road.

But could Ardley be set to pounce?

He has a modest goal scoring record but his attributes and skill set made him a valuable asset while playing for the Hatters last season.

And his-all round game could be of use to the Dons as they look to cement their League One status.
