Brentford are close to agreeing a one-year deal with former QPR and Cardiff forward Tommy Smith.

The 34-year-old has been on trial at Griffin Park after leaving the Bluebirds at the end of last season.

Smith impressed as a second-half substitute in Saturday's pre-season friendly win over Crystal Palace and is poised to join the Bees for the forthcoming campaign.

Boss Mark Warburton said: “I know Tommy from Watford. He’s a quality individual on and off the pitch. He had to come here and get fit because he didn’t play much last year.

“He’s happy to come and wants to stay in London. Hopefully we should reach a very positive conclusion. We’ll find out in the next 24 hours.”
