Dean Smith believes the James Tarkowski saga has come to a close after the defender released his statement regarding his recent actions.

The 23-year-old was disciplined by Brentford for his refusal to face Burnley and the defender admitted he wanted to return north to be nearer to his family as his mother has an incurable illness.

Tarkowski hasn't featured against Preston or Leeds and Smith revealed it was the fact that he made himself unavailable for Burnley, and not Middlesbrough three days earlier was what led to disciplinary action.

He said: “My feelings have been made clear at the start. I've talked about James a lot and that's not changed.

“He didn't play on the Friday and we were disappointed about it. He played the Tuesday before, he didn't make himself unavailable for that one, and we thought it was a disciplinary matter.

“James has come out with his statement and reasons and we're here to support him and we will do.

“I think he'll be a Brentford player and he is at the minute and still will be.”

Brentford are not back in action until after the January transfer window closes when they travel to Brighton on February 5.
