Head coach Dean Smith is delighted that Brentford have signed the cream of the crop from League One clubs in three key positions.

Romaine Sawyers joined the Bees on a free transfer from Walsall and will be fitting into the club's attacking midfield three; an area Brentford needed to strengthen after Alan Judge's injury while Sergi Canos and John Swift returned to Liverpool and Chelsea respectively.

John Egan also made the move to Griffin Park from Gillingham and will compete with Harlee Dean for the right centre back spot, with fit again Andreas Bjelland, Yoann Barbet and Jack O'Connell vying for the left centre back position.

And goalkeeper Daniel Bentley joins the club to give David Button some serious competition, with Jack Bonham pushing the pair along.

Applause: Dean Smith

Smith said: “The players who we've got in I'm really pleased with. They were three top players in League One last year and they've all got development in them and they can all get better at this football club. They've also got a load of games under their belt which is very important.”

Smith worked with Sawyers at Walsall before he moved to Brentford and he is delighted to be working with the Saint Kitts and Nevis international again.

The head coach believes that the 24-year-old was the best player in League One last season and can give a different dimension with his height and strength.

He said: “I was aware that Romaine's contract was running its course at the end of the season. I'm sure Walsall were trying to get him to sign a new contract but he probably had his sights set on a Championship club.

“We get him on a free transfer. For me, he was the best player in League One last season. For us to capture him is a great plus for us and now he has to replicate that form in the Championship.

“He can create and he can score. He needs to add more goals to his tally and he knows that. He can create and score.

“He also gives us a good physical presence. He's got good height and he's a strong lad as well.”

Egan's signing gives Brentford choice in central defence but it also allows Smith to work on a 3-5-2 system that is his preferred alternative formation.

The head coach added: “We spoke when I first came about playing three at the back and it's something we'll look at during pre-season but what John does is he gives us more of a balance in three left footers and two right footers.

New face: John Egan

“It gives us competition for places which is what you need if you want to be successful in the Championship.

“He had a terrific season last year and a terrific upbringing at Sunderland so it was a great signing for us.”

Bentley joins the club with the highest reputation after starring for Southend in the last few seasons and was the Shrimpers hero in their play-off final victory over Wycombe.

And Smith has been most impressed with the desire the 22-year-old has shown during his career so far.

With David Button established as the club's number one goalkeeper it gives the Brentford boss a selection headache, although the stopper's future is in doubt with his contract up next season.

Smith explained: “He's another one who has played a lot of games at a young age. He's got good experience for a young lad but plenty of development in him.

New Bee: Daniel Bentley

“He's got a desire to keep the ball out of the net. It's something I look for in a goalkeeper. People say he should be a good shot stopper but every goalkeeper should be that.

“It's the desire to keep it out. You can see it hurts him when he concedes a goal and he wants to move forward and progress.

“We had to move as David hasn't agreed a contract and the worry of whether he'd go or didn't accept the contract now.”

He added: "It's a fantastic situation for me as we've got three really good goalkeepers who can battle it out. That's the situation we find ourselves in at the club as we can't take the risk of David maybe going or letting his contract run down. It's a good signing for us."

The trio are expected to make their first appearances in a Brentford shirt at Boreham Wood on July 8.
