No sooner does one transfer window close - clubs including Chelsea are making plans for the next one.

Here's what they need most, and where they're likely to look.

A goalkeeper

For two consecutive windows, Asmir Begovic has been a model professional.

He is desperate for first team football, but knows it is highly unlikely at Chelsea so long as Thibaut Courtois remains fit.

Conte thought he had found his man, in Craig Gordon, but Celtic were reluctant to let the 34-year-old go.

He was seen as ideal due to his Premier League experience with Sunderland, and his age – making him more likely to be content with a back-up role.

Don't rule out the chance of another summer move for him to set Begovic free.

But talk of Joe Hart, presently on loan at Torino, is only likely to have substance if Courtois makes a move to Spain.

Next stop? Graig Gordon

At least one forward

Diego Costa is expected to be on his way once the season is over, and Michy Batshuayi doesn't appear to feature very highly in Conte's plans.

Other goalscorers presently on the payroll may be long-term options, but Tammy Abraham and Dominic Solanke simply aren't yet ready to play number nine in the Premier League week after week.

Ideally, Chelsea want a man with Champions League experience, and Alvaro Morata of real Madrid fits that bill.

The Spaniard has claimed that Chelsea last summer submitted a failed bid of £60m for his services.

Could a renewed bid succeed?

Kante's double: Tiemoue Bakayoko

A back-up for N'Golo Kante

How do you replace the irreplaceable? At some point, Chelsea will have to.

This season they have been lucky with injuries, but the defensive midfield position is somewhere the squad is clearly thin.

With Mikel John Obi and Oscar having left, Nathaniel Chalobah is probably next in line – though he lacks experience, and may be a season or two unripe for the main event.

Monaco's Tiemoue Bakayoko has been linked with a move – with a price in the region of £30m attached to the Frenchman.

Pricy: Virgil van Dijk of Southampton

A central defender

John Terry's playing career at Chelsea appears to be over, and Conte needs options.

He has got by this season with David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta, but last week lost cover with the departure of Branislav Ivanovic.

Yes, he has a newly restored Kurt Zouma, a recalled Nathan Ake (able to cover a number of bases), and Andreas Christensen should return from his loan to Borussia Monchengladbach.

But with Champions League football ramping the fixture list up to two games a week, more options are needed.

Southampton's Virgil Van Dijk is being watched by a number of clubs, Chelsea included, but he won't come cheap – and £60m is the talked-about fee.

Hammer: Michail Antonio (L)

A versatile wingback

Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso have kept the pace up and down the wings ever since the switch to 3-4-3, but Chelsea have few other tools of this type.

Pedro has been tried there, and worked quite well, and Ake might also one day provide an option.

Conte knows Juventus' Stephan Lichtsteiner, but at 33 he is probably too old to be lavishing cash on.

The fairytale option would be West Ham's Michail Antonio: the Wandsworth-born lad who has so impressed out east.

But, being English, Hammers can pretty much name their price.
