Brentford head coach Dean Smith has revealed that he has been speaking with the club about trying to ensure the Bees aren't selling players in the summer.

The west London club's policy has been that any player is for sale, as long as the price is right for Brentford.

While that will be true for all Championship clubs, Smith is keen to see the bulk of his squad stay at Griffin Park for a long time.

He said: “We've discussed holding onto players. We've been building for a period. We've lost players, but for good money.

“A team evolves and it's an emerging team and we want to keep them here as long as we can.”

There is a growing feeling around Griffin Park that the Bees have a squad capable of a promotion push next season and, while Smith wouldn't admit that, he is confident that he has a strong spine in his squad.

He added: “I think we've got a good nucleus of a team and we'll look to add it and strengthen it but this league is a tough league to target promotion straight away. You have to take groups of games and see how far you can go.”
