Dean Smith confirmed that Brentford have been having talks with Harlee Dean's representatives over a new contract.

The Bees defender admitted as much last month but has remained quiet on the progress of those talks.

Last summer, Brentford sold Jake Bidwell to QPR and David Button to Fulham, who both were coming into the final year of their contracts and the Bees had little chance of renewing them so cashed in.

Smith didn't give much away but is clearly keen for Dean to remain at Griffin Park beyond the end of next season, when his contract expires.

He said: “Harlee's representatives have spoken to the club and it's up to them to sort out.

“He's become captain and had a really good season and long may that continue. I think he's matured as a player and become a top 10 centre half as well.”

Dean is set to lead the Brentford side out against QPR on Saturday.
