Brentford will be reinvesting the money made from their January departures into the squad during the summer window.

The Bees sold James Tarkowski and Toumani Diagouraga during the window, while Jota returned to Eibar on loan.

And co-director of football Phil Giles insisted that the extra revenue would be put into the playing budget for the following season.

He said: “The money will be reinvested in the summer. I believe we're fine for FFP this season. We can factor it into next season's budget and the summer budget. That's the plan.”

Brentford already have targets in mind and have been making progress on putting everything in place so deals can be done quickly in the off-season.

Giles added: “We know who we'd like to add in the summer but we can't do anything until we get to the summer unless it's an overseas player. We can't actually sort anything out.

“It's a question of having our targets lined up for the summer. We'll also know about current players and it'll help us form where we want to spend the money on the team.

“There are a lot of players in the lower leagues who we know and can help our team. We're not talking to players at the minute from there as we can't do so.”

He added: “If we get the contracts sorted before the summer it helps. It's part of the role to be thinking long-term.

“We're always thinking about the squad and composition and make sure players come in and fit that style. We're working on pre-season right now.”

There has been a debate raging amongst Brentford fans about the best profile of player; whether it is plucking young talent from Premier League academies, taking the best players from the lower leagues or bringing in players from abroad.

Ryan Woods celebrates his goal

Giles, though, explained the pros and cons from both and sees it, partly, as a battle between price against the time taken to adjust to the move.

He said: “The lower leagues have been a good place to look for players and one benefit is they adapt quicker.

“Ryan (Woods) knew the league and fitted into the way we played and his style works well for us.

“He'd be less effective in a team that plays more direct football.

“When you bring a player from overseas he's got to adapt culturally and on a football level. It's a quicker route from the lower leagues but can be expensive if you can't get the right deal.”

The Bees will also have to decide whether to exercise the option to make Marco Djuricin's loan move from Red Bull Salzburg permanent.

Giles explained: “We know we've got a long time to make that decision. He got injured and is coming back.

Can be made permanent: Marco Djuricin

“Dean Smith needs time to evaluate Marco and his quality. But also the way he wants us to play football next season and who is the right profile for a striker.

“Marco is different to Hofmann for example. We'll make that decision over time.”

John Swift is on loan at Brentford for the rest of the season and his contract with Chelsea expires in June and Giles will consider the options then.

He explained: “We talked about doing the loan in January and getting that through and we'll sit down and see where are.

“We've got a season to work with him and can understand his qualities. We couldn't turn (Alex) Pritchard and (John) Toral into permanent deals – we'll see how it goes.”

Impressed last season: Alex Pritchard

Giles has been satisfied with the business he has done in the two transfer windows but sees room to improve.

He added: “There's always room for improvement and learning lessons. I've come in from a different industry.

“I've brought some of the skills into this environment. We can always do better at it. When you look at other football clubs they may have players who don't want to play, have personal issues, the pitch isn't good enough.

“We've had these issues and we're still in the top 10. We can learn as we go along but it hasn't been a disaster either.”
