Brentford are keeping their cards close to their chest regarding their interest in Sergi Canos.

The club admitted they were monitoring the 19-year-old's situation at Liverpool in May and the Spaniard has been tipped for the exit due to issues regarding a new contract.

The Reds have slapped a £4million price tag on the forward, who scored seven goals in 39 appearances while on loan at the Bees last season.

And Brentford head coach Dean Smith remained coy as to whether the club will move to sign Canos, who has attracted interest from QPR, Fulham, Reading and Watford.

He said: “We've not been given any price tag as we've not asked that question. I was of the understanding that Sergi would go to Liverpool and they'd decide what they'll do with him. Until that happens, it's not something you'll look into.”

Canos was handed his Liverpool debut by Jurgen Klopp for their final game of the season at West Brom and Smith revealed that the pair exchanged text messages, which make clear the 19-year-old's affection for Brentford.

Smith added: “It was good to see him make his Liverpool debut. I wished him well and I had a lovely text back from him.

“It's great to know that we've played a part in his development and he's got a soft spot for the club and his supporters.”
