Brentford have received an additional cash injection after Swansea signed Barnsley defender Alfie Mawson.

The defender opted to reject the Bees' contract offer last summer and moved to the Tykes but the west Londoners had a sell-on clause in place.

And with the Swans signing the centre back for a fee that reportedly could rise to the region of £5million it has given Brentford a boost going into transfer deadline day.

Mawson only made to appearances for Brentford, in the League Cup and the then called Johnstone's Paint Trophy before having loan spells elsewhere.

He spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Wycombe, forming a strong partnership with former Bee Aaron Pierre, as the Chairboys reached the League Two play-off final.

Mawson turned down the club's offer of a two-year deal and instead signed for Barnsley and played a key role as the Yorkshire side got to climb the Wembley steps in celebration twice in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and League One play-off finals.
