Brentford have confirmed the loan signing of Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom, as exclusively revealed by the Chronicle.

The Bees have fended off competition from League One rivals Peterborough, Leyton Orient and MK Dons for the 18-year-old, who has penned a one-month deal at Griffin Park.

Brentford boss Mark Warburton was in the stands as the youngster smashed a hat-trick in the north Londoners' 6-1 FA Youth Cup romp against Peterborough United on Monday night.

However, the switch was put on hold while Arsene Wenger weighed up his options in the wake of injuries to Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner before sanctioning the deal yesterday afternoon.

Warburton said: “Chuba is strong and quick, with a very good first touch. He’s greedy and enjoys scoring goals.

“It’s his first loan spell and League One is tough, so he might take some time to adapt. It’s a big jump from Under 21 football.”

Akpom made his Arsenal debut as a substitute in the 3-1 win at Sunderland back in September and made a cameo against West Brom in the Capital One Cup later that month.
